The Accounting and Auditing Board of Ethiopia (AABE) held a significant meeting on November 13th 2024 to discuss the implementation of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) initiated by FDRE Ministry of Finance across public bodies in Ethiopia. This initiative is being supported by a partnership with the Bill Gates Foundation, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability in public financial management.
The discussion brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, financial experts, and representatives from the Bill Gates Foundation. Participants emphasized the importance of adopting IPSAS to improve financial reporting and governance in the public sector.
“We believe that the implementation of IPSAS will not only strengthen the financial integrity of public bodies but also build trust with citizens,” said AABE’s A/Director General Fekadu Agonafer. “With the support of the Bill Gates Foundation, we are optimistic about the transformative potential of this initiative.”
To ensure effective implementation of IPSAS, based on the best practices the AABE offers technical assistance during Implementation road-map preparation, works on training and capacity building issues for public sector accountants, auditors, and financial managers. This helps build the necessary skills and knowledge for compliance with IPSAS requirements.
Representatives from the Bill Gates Foundation expressed their commitment to supporting these efforts, highlighting the foundation’s focus on improving public life and good governance through better financial governance.
The AABE plans to follow up this meeting with a series of workshops aimed at equipping public bodies with the necessary tools and knowledge for successful IPSAS implementation. The collaboration with the Bill Gates Foundation is expected to play a crucial role in driving these efforts forward.
