The Board Grants Public Auditor Licenses to Three Audit Firms
March 24th 2026 – Addis Ababa
The Accounting and Auditing Board of Ethiopia (AABE) has granted public auditor licenses to three audit firms pursuant to Directive No. 1096/2025 that the step advances regulatory compliance and strengthens oversight, with enabling such a firms to deliver audit services for public interest entities.
According to the Board’s A/Director General, Mr. Fikadu Agonafer, significant efforts have been made in recent years to strengthen and transform the audit profession in Ethiopia. He also noted that international best practices have been reviewed as part of these efforts. He also emphasized that auditors play a crucial role in safeguarding the public interest.
It was highlighted that the establishment of Ethiopia’s capital market is a key reason for this transition. To qualify for a public auditor license, firms were required to meet several criteria, including: being officially recognized, having at least three years of audit practice experience, completing relevant audit training programs, obtaining audit quality assurance clearance from the Board, and demonstrating strong professional competence.
The Board also indicated that additional audit firms will be granted public auditor licenses in the future, provided they meet the required standards. Representatives of the licensed firms stated that while this opportunity is significant, it also comes with considerable responsibility and challenges, and they are committed to delivering high-quality results.
In closing, Mr. Fikadu reminded the firms that the license carries substantial responsibility and affirmed that the Board will maintain strict oversight and supervision of their activities.
